Having an active lifestyle was a trait I always wanted to have, but It seemed so impossible to get! The way I lived my life ten years ago was so much different of what it is today. I was a complete homebody. Even from a young age I would rather watch TV than going out with friends and play. However, one day I decided to change the course of my life. I was so fed up with me and the course my life was taking. Are you going through the same problem? Let me tell you there is still hope for you! Today I want to share with you 5 baby steps for an active lifestyle.
What does an active lifestyle mean? For me — more than having consistent workout routines, which are still very important — It’s to have that desire of going for a walk even if it’s 20°F outside. Go for a hike or a bike ride. It’s going out and explore. In other sense, it’s to be adventurous and find excitement in all the things we are meant and able to do with our bodies. Having an active lifestyle is so much fun, plus it’s really good for you. According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, having an active lifestyle has numerous benefits:
- Reduce risk of cardiovascular disease
- Improves your quality life
- It can strengthen your bones and muscles.
- Improves your mood and mental health
- Increases your chances of having a longer life! How cool is that!
What baby steps can you take to have an active lifestyle?
Having an active lifestyle can be hard sometimes! This is because you first need to form a habit. You need to change the way you have been living your entire life and shift to whole new perspective and paradigm. Don’t worry though. Here are some little tips that will help you on your new journey 🙂
– Desire it
First of all — In my humble opinion and the most important thing — you need to desire it so much! You must want to do it and daydream about the person you can and will become. Maybe there’re motivators behind this decision — get in shape, improve health, etc — Being active is an achievable habit, but you it requires the dedication and willingness to work hard and make a commitment with yourself. It means to not give up regardless of your emotions! That’s right, there will be days, weeks or even months were you don’t feel like being active at all. But your desire must be bigger than the mode you are at a particular moment.
– Learn from others
If you don’t know how to be active, find people who practice this lifestyle! Surround by them! I’m sure they would gladly help you on your journey. There are many groups you can join that do fun and active stuff like going for walks, playing basketball, football, and so on! Don’t think that the only way to be active is to go to the gym for 2 hours a day every day!
– Find your favorite activities
This is so important! As I told you before, I was a complete homebody! I had no desire for any sports or outdoor activities whatsoever. Nonetheless, I married a very active man! With him I was able to discover new adventurous and ways to be active. Things like hiking, mountain biking, snowboarding, rollerblading, canoeing, swimming, etc!!
What is it that you like? For instance, Do you like nature? Find activities where you can be surrounded by trees, flower, lakes! Go for walks, and enjoy the beauty of God’s creation! Deep in you, there must be something you love and that you can add some fun and pleasant active activities.
– Practice your new skills and enjoy the journey
You might feel discouraged when you can only walk for five minutes! Remember, that’s ok! We all start from somewhere. When I first went mountain biking I couldn’t manage to bike while standing up, let alone get off my bike properly! It took practice and some falls for me to learn. To this day I’m still improving. Anyway — my point is — enjoy the ride, the little victories. Once you have established an active lifestyle the only regret is to not have started earlier!
– Include workout routines
Although I mention that an active lifestyle isn’t limited to just a workout routine, I must admit that is a part of it. I’m not saying that you have to go to the gym for 2 hours every day. But you should get 3 to 5 workouts a week. The good thing of this is that they can be between 30 to 45 minutes each! Don’t believe the myth that you have to workout for more than an hour to get results. Just be smart and choose something that will challenge and push your limits!
Are you ready to start living an active lifestyle! Let me assure you that it will change you for good! I encourage you to be the best you can be!
