If you want to decorate a dark-colored mug with markers, the markers must be highly pigmented. If you don’t have this type of marker, you can easily recreate the same effects with regular paint and Q-Tips®.

You can opt to decorate a light-colored mug with regular markers as well!

Step 1 – Print Hot Cocoa Mug Template

You’ll find a section with the templates at the end of the tutorial. There’s a pre-colored version and a version for coloring. For a faster and easier craft, print the colored version, and for a more extended activity, choose the one for coloring.

Before you print the template, take a look at the pages. I included two different types of mugs in many colors. You don’t need to print all of them.

Cut all the pieces you want to use. As I mentioned, there are many different types and colors of mugs.

all elements cut and ready to be assembled.

You can also check out the “Assemble Ideas!” page or show your children which hot cocoa they want to build.

You can also go with the flow and let your kid glue as many toppings as he wants.

Tip: You’ll likely need to help your child cut small and intricate decorations, like the hot cocoa drippings, strawberries, and single gummies, which may be hard for little hands to handle.

Step 2 – Decorate

For this step-by-step tutorial, I decided to use a creamy-colored mug, some beads, wafer straws, whipped cream, dripping white hot cocoa, a gingerbread man cookie, and a heart for the center of the mug.

You can also make dark hot cocoa by cutting the brown ovals and gluing them on the cup.

  1. Glue handle to mug.
  2. Glue wafers.
  3. Add whipped cream.

Note: if you decorate with marshmallows, I suggest you glue the brown hot cocoa oval right after gluing the wafers.
