Get your kids ready for an exciting outer space adventure with this Paper Plate Rocket Craft!
Whether your little ones are just discovering space or already love all things rockets, planets, or stars, this activity is the perfect way to keep them busy while also practicing fine motor skills, choice-making, and more.
Kids can use different colors, decorations, and favorite crafting materials to personalize their rockets. Plus, with my free PDF template available in full color and a coloring version, this craft is as simple as print, painting, cutting, and gluing.
Note: This project is best suited for toddlers, preschoolers, kindergartners, and even older children with the guidance of a parent or teacher.
Let’s launch into creativity!
Tools & Materials
- Printer
- Template (download at the end of the article; you don’t need to subscribe!)
- Glue
- 9-inch paper plate
- Scissors
- White cardstock
- Favorite paint color
- Paintbrush
- Colors, markers (optional)
Super tip: If you don’t have paper plates, cut a 9-inch circle with white cardstock.
Step 1 – Print Rocket Template
Before you print the template, check out the “Assemble Ideas” page. It has different rockets you can make. Print the pages under each little rocket if you like a specific one.
As with all of my crafts, you can make them as easy or complex as you like. Print the colored template to save time, or print the coloring for a more extended activity.
I printed the colored template!
Step 2 – Cut Rocket Shape & Paint
In the template, there’s also a page that shows you how to make a rocket shape out of paper plates.
For this step-by-step tutorial, I chose the first shape.
It’s quite simple!
Fold the paper plate in half (don’t do a very hard fold) and trace the shape shown in the template, then cut through the line, and just like that, you have the rocket shape.
Before you cut the rest of the pieces, let your child paint the rocket in his favorite color.
Step 3 – Cut Template
Cut the pieces you need to assemble your rocket. I included a page for rocket strips. You can also use different colored paper for them.
Step 4 – Glue
Let’s assemble our rocket!
- Start by gluing the strips on the rocket. Tip: you’ll need to cut the strips to fit different areas of the rocket as well.
- Glue window.
- Glue exhaust flames to the rocket engines. (Note: For the thin rocket shape, you need to cut the engine on the sides to make it fit the rocket’s base).
- Glue flames to the rocket.
- Finally, glue finds on the sides.
And, just like that, your rocket craft is ready to launch!
Doesn’t it look so cool?
More Ideas
Here are other rocket ideas.
You can mix and match the templates as well to create all sorts of different rockets.
For the thin rockets, you’ll need to cut the engine to fit the rocket’s base.
How about these purple and blue rockets?
I had so much fun designing them!
Which one do you like better?
My favorite one was the gold one with red strips!
