Looking for an easy watermelon craft for kids? You’re in the right place! All you need is a printer, my free PDF printable template, scissors, and glue — it really can’t get much easier than that.
Kids can build their own watermelon craft by choosing their favorite watermelon style, mixing and matching silly faces, and putting the pieces together however they’d like.

This watermelon craft is especially great for kindergarteners and elementary-aged kids, though preschoolers can absolutely join in with a little extra help cutting and assembling the smaller pieces.
Tools & Materials
- Printer
- Template (download at the end of the article – no subscription required)
- White cardstock
- Black and soft pink cardstock (optional)
- Black marker (optional)
- Scissors
- Pencil
- Glue

Step 1 – Print Watermelon Craft Template
I love giving you and your kids options, so I included four different easy watermelon craft designs to choose from:
- Whole watermelon with green stripes
- Round watermelon slice
- Half a watermelon slice
- Quarter watermelon wedge.

For this step-by-step tutorial, I’ll be using the quarter watermelon wedge template.
Don’t worry if you choose a different design, though — each printable template page includes a small preview image showing how the finished watermelon craft should look, making everything super easy and convenient to follow.
Step 2 – Cut Template
Most of the watermelon craft pieces are easy to cut out, but younger kids may need a little extra help with the smaller details like the seeds, cheeks, and tiny mouth pieces.

I’ve found that instead of carefully cutting every tiny printable piece, it’s often easier to cut some of them directly from colored cardstock or construction paper. For example, you can use black cardstock and have kids cut small teardrop shapes to create the watermelon seeds. Not only is this easier, but it also adds a fun hands-on element to the craft.
The same idea works great for the cheeks and mouth pieces too. The larger open smile is fairly easy to cut, but the tiny curved mouth can be a little tricky for little hands. A simple black marker works wonderfully for drawing the mouth directly onto the watermelon craft instead.
Step 3 – Assemble Watermelon
Now it’s time to build your own watermelon!

Keep the small preview picture nearby while building the watermelon craft so kids can easily see where each piece belongs. It’s also a fun way to help little ones practice following directions and visual sequencing skills.

- Start by gluing the watermelon flesh onto the rind piece.
- Next, glue on the eyes and cheeks to create the face.
- Finish by adding the seeds and mouth to complete your cute watermelon craft.
Now, let’s have a chat about the bite piece
You can leave your watermelon craft just the way it is, but I think the little bite piece adds such a fun and playful detail to this yummy fruit craft!

You can glue the bite piece directly onto the watermelon, trace around it with a pencil, and cut the shape out, or simply cut around the template while holding it in place. Any option works great, so feel free to choose whichever method is easiest for you.

Other Easy Watermelon Craft Ideas
If your kids want to keep crafting, try making some of the other watermelon designs included in the printable template pack! Besides the quarter watermelon wedge, there’s also a whole striped watermelon, a round watermelon slice, and a half watermelon slice.
Each version has its own fun look and personality, making this a great activity for kids who love mixing and matching to create different watermelon craft characters.

When kids finish their craft, they can have fun playing with their little watermelon characters and even make up some silly stories and adventures. The different watermelon designs make it easy to create fun personalities and encourage imaginative play long after the craft is done.
